When I Came Out...

I come from a very liberal family, so I was always taught that any sexuality is a-ok and I can do whatever I like as long as I’m happy. In fact, it appeared that my mother believed in this so hard that she shot out the other end and was convinced I was gay in my early teens.

She’d sit me down once a week for the “it’s ok to be gay” talk, to which I’d always say “Yes, I know!” I think this stemmed from the fact that I hit puberty pretty late, so my sexuality didn’t really blossom until I was 18 and I didn’t have any massive attractions to anyone until I was 16 or so - I never commented on the appearance or attactiveness of anyone, so I suppose this = I like girls to dear Mumsy.

Anyway, long story short is that I had my first boyfriend (at age 17) for two months before I could work up the nerve to tell my parents! They were fine with it, of course, but it was a strange situation to be in!

Anyway, years later at 19 I’m finally comfortable with my sexuality, and, thanks largely to Mum and Dad, I’m accepting of the fact that sexuality can be fluid for some and whatever you happen to feel is nothing to be ashamed of; since learning that enjoying sex is totally cool I’ve kissed two boys and two girls. My parents love my current boyfriend to bits, too. :)

Anyway, having that dialogue opened up for us early on has been great for me and my sisters; thanks, parents!
